It has been reported that Michelin would consider returning to Formula One. Their Motorsport director, Pascal Couasnon has stated that there would be conditions attached that would need to be met before the company would enter the sport.
These conditions include Formula One adopting eighteen inch wheels and making the tyres more durable. The idea of having eighteen inch wheels isn’t new as the Lotus team tested them last year, while many would surely welcome tyres that had lower degradation.
Pirelli’s current contract ends after the 2016 season and although they have done a very good job creating high degradating tyres, perhaps it is time for another tyre manufacturer to have a go with a different philosophy which could help improve the spectacle. Obviously Formula One could just tell Pirelli to create a more durable tyre, which the company is surely more than capable of achieving.
