The 1982 season was an eventful and difficult year for Formula One. In the previous round Gilles Villeneuve had died during qualifying, which meant that only one Ferrari, that of Didier Pironi lined up alongside the other drivers at Monaco.
Rene Arnoux took an early lead in his Renault, having qualified on pole position. he built up a lead but spun at the swimming pool section on lap fifteen, having also stalled the car he was forced to retire.
His team mate, Alain Prost, took over the lead and remained there until lap seventy four where he lost control of his car, spinning into the Armco barriers, damaging his car beyond repair, leading to an instant retirement. This handed the lead over to Riccardo Patrese (Brabham), he however also spun, surrendering the lead to Ferrari’s Didier Pironi.
Pironi ran out of fuel on the final lap and after several retirements, the lead was conceded back to Patrese who claimed his first win in Formula One.
