There are two drivers who will be returning to Formula One in 2016. The first is Kevin Magnussen and the other is Esteban Gutierrez.
I have written a few posts about Gutierrez already over the past six months. Most have highlighted at some point the fact that Esteban Gutierrez will have a second chance to prove his worth in Formula One and that despite a less than eye catching stint with Sauber, he deserves a second chance in the sport.
Very few drivers are able to get a second chance in Formula one after their first, the most recent (excluding Michael Schumacher) is Timo Glock who competed in the sport for three rounds in 2004 for Jordan, not returning to a competitive drive until 2008 with Toyota.
Gutierrez’s presence in Formula One will help aid the sport in his home country of Mexico whose race returned to the F1 calendar last year and had great fanfare surrounding the event.
Gutierrez’s first spell in Formula One was perhaps hindered by the financial difficulty that Sauber were in during that time. You could even argue that Gutierrez perhaps entered Formula One too early, needing another season in GP2 before graduating into the sport.
There will undoubtedly be some in Formula One who will be scrutinizing Gutierrez’s performances almost waiting and wanting him to slip up. But there is talent there, let’s hope Gutierrez is in a team that will help and allow that talent to shine through.
