Having attempted the Indianapolis 500 in 2017, this season will see Fernando Alonso resume his quest of achieving the Triple Crown of Motorsport (Indianapolis 500, Monaco Grand Prix and the 24 Hours of Le Mans).
It was confirmed that Alonso will be competing in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) with Toyota alongside his Formula One commitments with McLaren in 2018. This would appear to confirm that Alonso will be racing in around twenty five events throughout the calendar year as his deal with Toyota includes not only Le Mans but additional WEC events.Embed from Getty Images
Alonso is already well into his preparations as he competed in another sportscar event in January this year, the 24 Hours of Daytona.
He could potentially emulate fellow Formula One driver, Nico Hulkenberg, who won the 24 Hours of Le Mans at his first attempt driving for Porsche in 2015. It is interesting to note that Hulkenberg also didn’t solely compete at Le Mans in 2015, competing as well at the 6 Hours of Spa.
