Following on from last weekend’s 104th running of the Indianapolis 500 the IndyCar series returns to action this weekend at Gateway for its third double header of the season.
Scott Dixon still leads the championship having finished inside the top five in the last three races. He is 84 points ahead of Josef Newgarden who likewise has finished inside the top five in the three races prior to this weekend.
Third in the championship is Pato O’Ward who is 33 points behind Newgarden and four points ahead of Graham Rahal. The Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing driver has finished third in the two races prior to this weekend.
The 2020 Indianapolis 500 winner Takuma Sato enters the weekend in sixth five points behind fifth placed Simon Pagenaud and seven points behind Rahal. The Japanese driver has an 18 point gap to the first driver behind him in the championship, Colton Herta. Sato’s win last weekend also means that IndyCar has seen five different drivers win the last five races going into the latest double header of the season.
The first double header of the season at Road America saw the Chip Ganassi Racing drivers of Scott Dixon and Felix Rosenqvist take the honours. The two races held at Iowa were won by Penske drivers Simon Pagenaud and Josef Newgarden. It will therefore be interesting to see whether a particular team will leave this latest double header having secured victories in both races.
