This coming weekend is set to see Super Formula contest the third round of its 2020 season.
Ryo Hirakawa leads the championship by 14 points from Sho Tsuboi. Hirakawa followed up his pole position and win in the season opener with pole position and fourth at Okayama.
Tsuboi meanwhile bounced back from retiring in Motegi to win last time out. He led teammate Hiroaki Ishiura over the line in Okayama for an INGING 1-2. Ishiura is two points behind his teammate going into this weekend having also finished in the points in Motegi.
Tied for fourth, and two points behind Ishiura, are Kenta Yamashita and Nick Cassidy. Yamashita was unable to compete last time out in Okayama while Cassidy finished third and claimed the fastest lap in Okayama having finished sixth in the season opener. Two points behind Yamashita and Cassidy is Sacha Fenestraz who retired early on in Okayama but did score points as he managed to qualify inside the top three.
In the Team’s Championship Team Impul have a two point lead over INGING going to SUGO, both teams claimed double points finishes in Okayama. Eight points behind INGING is Kondo Racing who had a tough Okayama round with one car failing to start and the other retiring early in the race, having started the season with a 2-3 finish. They only have a two point advantage to Team TOM’s in fourth who are the only team to get both cars into the points in the opening two races of the season.
The 2019 race at SUGO was won by Naoki Yamamoto ahead of Kamui Kobayashi and Lucas Auer. Yamamoto enters the 2020 edition tenth in the championship level on points with Tomoki Nojiri and one point behind Yuhi Sekiguchi in ninth. Kobayashi meanwhile is down in twentieth in the championship with no points having finished fourteenth in Motegi and was unable to compete at Okayama.
